Grenville Ferreira (Dad)

Dad's life: When I interviewed my dad he told me about his past life in India. My dad grew up in Bandra,Mumbai, India until he turned 30. Once he and my mum got married, they moved to New Zealand where they would start a new life and raise my sister and I. My dad always tells me stories about his time in India. The kind of where lots of people were homeless though some were extremely wealthy. He had to work two jobs and study hard in order to help pay for their family home and make a bright future for himself and family. What I’ve been told about my past ancestry is that my family didn’t come from wealth. My dad had to work long hours to help out. He would do anything for his family just to make sure they stay afloat. My dad has taught me a lot as I grow up and I am so thankful for the life my dad and my mum have given me in New Zealand.

Grandma

My Grandma! My grandma is from Mumbai, India. She is born and raised as a proud Indian. Throughout her life, she has had some ups and downs. Her life was not perfect. She got married to grandpa (papa) George and had five beautiful children. She had 3 sons (Rayner, Grenville (my dad) and Sterling) and two daughters (Kim and Venus). Sadly my grandpa passed away from a heart attack when my dad was young. My grandma is now in her 80’s still living her best life. She is an expert cook who can make anything and always has a kind, warm heart. My grandma and grandpa loved travelling but she has stopped since her husband passed away. They would travel everywhere but even though he is gone she still loves to travel to a few places even though she is now 80! Just this year she came down by herself! All the way from India to New Zeland enjoy her last trip here since she is sadly getting too old to fly all this way. She stayed for December all the way to February. I loved having my grandma here. She is amazing and even though she lives all the way in India it's the best time when we get to talk on the phone.

Samantha Ferreira (Mum)

Mum’s life: My mum’s life wasn’t far different from my dad’s. My mum was born in Mumbai, India but moved to New Zealand with my Nana and Papa when she was two, so she basically grew up in NZ. Same with my dad my mum’s ancestry also didn’t come from a rich family. Her family also struggled with money and jobs. Something that really stood out to me was that my mum and her brothers and sisters built there house that they had lived in for 30 years until they sadly sold it 5 years ago. This really surprised me because of the number of times I had been to my grandparent’s house and never understood how they did it back then. In the 80’s it was very expensive to buy anything especially build a house so I am extremely proud of the hard work my mum and all my aunties and uncles put in to create such a wonderful house. My mum has taught me a lot that she has learnt from her past relatives, it is never take anything for granted.
